NICK
BENSEN - No Resistance
Nick
is the mastermind behind Free City Media, and this is the follow up
to "Psychedelic Juggernaut", and that title alone should point
you to where Nicks head and music is.
Oddly,
for a Californian based musician, Nick has a Eurocentric approach to
things, as this is redolent of the whole Bevis Frond / Woronzow vibe,
which fortunately, is in favour round our way.
But
then, of course, Nick throws a curve ball by heading down "Magical
Mystery Tour" road, as on the title track. And then it's a brief
psych guitar fest on "Great Burst Of Clarity" before things
head off planet again, on our favourite track, the trippy, Floydian
"Unrealized Voyage To hammerfest".
This
is a quality, diverse set of material from the multi talented (wrote,
produced, played all instruments, general smarty pants) Mr Bensen, and
one that followers of psych would do well to investigate. Enjoyment
guaranteed.

SILBERNACHT
- Nachtgeweithe
This
is Mr Essers 3rd release following on from "Gabrielstal" and
"Nacht ohne Sterne". He is still operating in a curious hybrid
between thirties horror movie scores and modern classical, with the
odd nod to more traditional classical music, and it's still very good.
There
are 3 pieces on offer here; "Dem Junklem Engel" (to the dark
angel), "Die Tranem des Nachthimmels" (the tears of the nightly
sky) and "Unter dem Todesstern" (under the star of death).
As you can probably guess, the mood is resolutely down and created through
a hypnotic dream state.
The
title of this release is lifted from Wagners "Tristan and Isolde",
which should give you an inkling of where his head is at. Very much
love or loathe, this continues a fine sequence of releases.
You
can get any of the 3 releases for $4/5 each from Frank EBer, Kempener
Alle 108, D-47803 Krefeld, Germany.
Teratism -
Ex Infernus
(Root Of All Evil Records, 2002)
Blimey!
Where's my safety blanket when I need it. Death metal the old way, but
with black metal sentiments, and they spray Friedrich Nietzsche quotes
around without a license!
'Ex
Infernus" is a 4 track eepee from the self proclaimed purveyors
of darkness containing "Resurrection Denied" and "Hate"
from the their self-titled demo, as well as the debut of "Children
of Scorn" (from the forthcoming EP "Invocatum Furae Diabolis").
Also unveiled is a live version of "Resurrection Denied" which
is 'sure to chastize the most revalant of God's creation.' So there.
US
based Teratism are comprised of ex members of as the charmingly named
Anal Blast, Lorde Of All Desires, Mourning, Pentagoria and Theatre Of
The Macabre. A couple of demos down the line Earl at Root of All Desire
said I'll have a piece of that, please, and here we are.
Draing
inspiration from the European likes of Mayhem and Darkthrone, the sacred
choir intro is a nice touch before they launch into the utterly fabulous
"Resurrection Denied". Unusually for a death metal band, the
live version is better than the studio one. Go figure! "Hate"
and "Children of Scorn", whilst more conventional black metal,
don't quite have the raging hatred of "Resurrection..", but
are worthy just the same. A good introduction, hopefully they'll keep
it together for a full length releae.
