Colchester Recordings - Yeah, It's Supposed To Sound Like That Vol
II
A variety of artists on this one, so lots of different dynamics
and influences are at play here. I love compilations though I do
feel sometimes that they should be called complications. They are
a bit like sticking your hand in a goodie bag with your eyes shut,
a surprise every time, and this one didn't disappoint. Lots of different
styles flowing through it, rap hip-hop, urban and some Irish tones,
the list goes on and on. A variety of treats with something to suit
every mood and taste and all on one CD - bonus! Great value for
money and no naff songs either. Lots of influences are evident,
all sorts from primal Scream, Leftfield, Eminem and Dizzy Rascal.
There are also some Acid Jazz and 70's and 80's vibes going on.
It's a fun CD that keeps you listening, to quote the blurb "
these compilations are diverse because our tastes are diverse -
yeah it's as simple as that", straight to the point just like
the CD itself.
Iain Archer - Flood The
Tanks
After my initial encounter with Keven I said " I always wondered
what it would be like to hear Funkadelic having sex with Frank Zappa,
and now I know. Very messy, but wonderfully entertaining and inspirational."
I was right then and I'm right now. Mr Brennan is a major, if bizarre
talent, and we should be clutching his output tightly to us muttering
"mine, all mine". This time around we're being regaled
with stories of Ironsides The Wheelchair Queen, a lava eating Martian,
so why are you still reading this instead of heading off to his
website to find out more?
Serious reviews would be saying Beefheart, Waits, off kilter sense
of humour underlying a skewed view of the world. Me, I say it's
bloody good fun and to hell with the end of the world as we know
it.

Northern Remedy - Red Eyes EP
A zesty EP that packs a punch, it literally just runs up to you,
knocks you on your ass and makes you sit up and listen. Lots of
different influences and styles run all the way through. OCS, stereophonics
with a wee bit of Jet jumping in from time to time. Lots of good
old-fashioned Rock N Roll with a funky blues twist to keep you on
your toes, bring it on!! A very intense EP with lots of big sounds
and a strong energetic front man. All the songs are great but the
ones that stand out are V E G A S - lots of husky tones and some
wicked bass in this one. Mr. Jones' Daughter is incredible; it's
all about a very dirty girl and sounds like somebody from Texas
wrote it. Blackbird is just spine tingling, it's the most amazing
touchy feely song that just sends tremors through you. NR have great
charisma and style that literally pours out of your speakers, which
incidentally have to be turned up LOUD! Their catchy feel good sounds
would be perfect for a sunny day at a festival - a must see as well
as a must hear.

Bubba Thomas - Love Ain't Enough
Grammy-nominated drummer Bubbha Thomas has recently released his
10th album, 'Love Ain't Enough'. During the last 30 years Bubbha
has played with the likes of Arnett Cobb, Eddie Harris, Ronnie Laws,
Conrad Johnson, Joe Sample, Kirk Whalum, Kyle Turner, Chuck Jackson
and Don Wilkerson amongst others, and this is another notable landmark
on his musical journey.
Although 'Love Ain't Enough' is based in contemporary, smooth jazz
there are nods to the worlds of R&B and blues, with one of the
highlights being 'Shoppin' Blues' which features some powerful vocals
from Lora Sims. Elsewhere Bubba dips in and out of the jazz world,
yet manages to find a groove that appeals to all, regardless of
their affinity to the world of jazz. The title track, written by
his son, William Thomas II, is another gem, and the whole CD is
simply pure class.
Sia - Breathe Me
Sia has previously worked with Massive Attack and Zero 7, but this
is the second single from the talented Australian vocalist.
A piano led melancholic song, 'Breathe Me' is one of those gossamer
songs that cling to you, easing its way into your consciousness,
with the beautiful voice of Sia just slipping between the sheets.
A fabulous single, which highlights the difference between ambience
and blandness.
