WHOLE
LOTTA LED - Edinburgh Liquid Rooms
Having
first caught sight of the UKs premier Led Zeppelin tribute
band on their Led Zep IV tour, and having been suitably
impressed, what better way to spend a Saturday evening
than to head off to the second biggest dump in town, to
witness another performance. So 7.30 and the place is
rocking to "Good Times, Bad Times", but there's
something wrong. Is it the preponderence of idiots roaming
around the bar area kicking me in the shins, or a spark
that seems to have gone walk about. Suffice to say, when
the first set ended, myslef an Mista Numbawunzepfan were
contemplating heading for the door. But we stuck around.
And
it seems the band knew something was wrong, for the singer
commented, 'now we're really going to get started', and
amazingly, the second set rocked like a bastard! As well
as host of classics, some underplayed numbers made a welcome
appearance, "Gallows Pole, "The Ocean"
and a stonking blast of WIllie Dixons, "You Shook
Me", replete with harmonica solo.
A
special word for the drummer who has got to be the best
drummer doing the club circuits at present, even if he
looks better suited to a Who tribute band. Along with
the imoressive bass player they make for a powerful combo.
The singer toils to hit some of the high notes, and the
guitarist looks best suited for a Def Leppard tribute,
but their love for the music shines through. And what
looked to be heading for a disaster was turned round in
the second half, which actually shows how good they are
as performers. A victory snatched from defeat.
