Interview

Talking to Tippi

Z: Who are you and how would you personally describe your music?

Tippi: I am a singer/songwriter from Glasgow. I would describe my music as guitar driven pop.

Z: When writing, where do you begin?

Tippi: When writing I begin with the chords. I muck about with different progressions until I get a feel that I like, then I try and add lyrics. I always need a story idea for the song before I can write.

Z: Which groups, artists and/or bands inspire you?

Tippi: I am inspired by artists such as Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin, The Cure, Morrisey, Paul Weller,Jeff Buckley, John Martyn and Radiohead to name a few.

Z: Are you influenced by art and literature at all?

Tippi: I'm very influenced by literature. I often read books that will inspire lyrical ideas. I am very inspired by people who have made a difference.

Z: Are there any songs/tracks that you have heard and thought, I wish I'd written that?

Tippi: Oh Yes...........High and Dry by Radiohead, Bless the Weather by John Martyn, Black Dog by Led Zeppelin, Satisfied Mind by Jeff Buckely and Neddle and the Damage Done by Neil Young.

Z: Do you push yourself to write, or do you have to wait until you're inspired?

Tippi: A bit of both. When I don't write for a couple of weeks, I get twitchy and have to make myself sit down and write. I try to spend at least two days a week writing, but sometimes its hard to fit in with rehearsals and all the other music things I do.

Z: What was it that made you go into into making music?

Tippi: When I was around 5 or 6 years old, my Grandfather, who was a musician, taught me to read music. Thats when my musical journey began, since then I've not been able to get enough of it. The only time I'm 100% happy is when I'm doing my music.

Z: Do you feel the internet is a good way of helping/promoting your music?

Tippi: The internet is a fantastic way to help and promote an artist. There is so much great music out there, that in the past was quite difficult to get to, the internet has made it easier, especially as more people are releasing albums independently.

Z: Has the computer age, and its use in creating, editing and manipulating music helped you in any way?

Tippi: When I'm recording I like to record the band live in the studio. I love the atmosphere that is created in the session, doing it live, capturing the moment! With advances in technology, we can then go back to the track and overdub, which is great. I'm not a fan of chopping up parts, putting them in time etc etc.....I beleive that you should be good enough to put the part down or you shouldn't be there.

Z: Give me three good reasons why someone should buy your CDs, barring threats of bodily harm?

Tippi: Okay....Great Songs, Great Stories, Great album that I'm very proud off!

Z: Finally, If you were another person, would YOU be friends with you?

Tippi: Emmmmmm...probably not, I'd probably say....... 'she's a pain in the ass too much of a perfectionist....'
