HAMADRYAD - Conservation
Of Mass
Aaak! Prog alert!
Run for the hills! Intricate time changes! Lyrics about witches and human
magnets! Right that got rid of the Britney Spears fans (who are avid readers
of the Zeitgeist reviews).
Where to begin? 1971!
Only joking. This is intricate, high tech prog that the Dream Theater
fans will lap up. Yes its bombastic, indeed pomptastic, over the top and
larger than life. But that's what traditional progressive (:-) music is
supposed to be about.
The music here is
varied, from complex progressive elements to borderline heavy rock passages.
Its not easy listening, but sometimes its worth the effort. Vocally we're
in Jon Anderson territory with trousers tight and harmonies high.
This is not an album that will win over unbelievers but if you take your
prog seriously then this is very much for you.

The Visit - Just Visiting
This is apparently
The Visit's debut EP, and it is a solid piece of psyche tinged pop music.
Very sixties in feel and influence it is enjoyable romp. "The Waltz"
is a very melodic guitar led song that neatly combines the popular and
the rock to good effect.
Next up is the lighter
in the air ballad that is "Space Monkey", Not a paean to the
lamentable band of the same name but rather about that Russian monkey
that was blasted into space pre Yuri Gagarin. As an official fat bastard
I am interested in the concept of dehydrated ice cream..
Last up is probably
the poppiest of the pop, "Don't Lose Your Head" is really quite
sweet but is saved from banality by the spacerockish instrumental segment.
They more I listen to this the more I like it. Good, intriguing.
