GRATITUDE - 3 Tracks (First Demo)

A collaboration between Swiss percussionist Christoph Erni and South African multi instrumentalist this 3 track EP is a thing of beauty. "Positivity" sends out a message of positive vibrations which we all need sometimes, "Izzy" a song of regret yet redemption and "Tugela" a celebration of natural beauty which flows along in synch with the river its named after. If any of you remember Johnny Clegg, Sipho Mchunu and Juluka then you'll know what I'm talking about when I talk about tribal acoustic rhythms ebbing and flowing, beating just underneath the pulse. Marvellous stuff.

DELICATE AWOL - Our Genome (Day Release)

Well Delicate AWOL are all grown up now. Trying to track a path between their 1st demo tape which I've still got tucked away somewhere and this glistening, psychedelic beast isn't easy. For this is glorious. The kind of CD Mogwai have been failing to create for quite some time now.

Delicate AWOL are interested in the spaces inbetween the songs rather than just with the songs themselves. Not for them the shackles of verse chorus verse. Instead they're on more than familiar terms with the dreaded free jazz movement (lets assume for the sake of argument there is a free jazz movement, why wouldn't there be). Vocals are minimalist but moods are maximalist. (Another new word!)

You have to let this music breathe for a while, let the ambience draw you in, but its definitely worth it.
