JOHN BARTLES - Liar

The Livonia Centers very own Captain Beefheart is back with his (alleged) 42nd album. If the song titles weren't clue enough, Track 5 is entitled "Silversteinian Stigmata", and you ought to know all about the late great Shel Silverstein, purveyor of "I Got Stoned And I Missed It" amongst many others. Greeat! Mr Bartles may have tried to fool us by releasing this under his own name rather than Big Fat Whitey (see past Zeitgeists), but we know!

Mr Bartles wanders through his Beefheartian world replete with 100% non-PC lyrics, ragged vocals and songs called "I Licked The Sores Of The Babylon Whore" and we love him all the more for it.

I was particularly taken with the swing of "Let's Obsess About Death" and the sheer insanity of "Little Black Jeezus". Sometimes its blooze, sometimes its jaaaz, sometimes its just plain mad. Be afraid, be very afraid.
