BARRA
- "Eternal Magus"
If
you like Celtic and folk influenced rock then Barra, named
after the Hebridean island of the same name, could be
for you!
The title track depicts a generic magus (meaning not one
of the Wise Men or a Persian priest) and encaptures perfectly
the idealistic dreamlike timeless quality of Barra's music.
For hope springs eternal here and it is difficult not
to be enticed by the poignant haunting vocals of Tracey-Anne
Sparkes (Sample the wonderful track 'Badda') or the semi
acoustic strumming and keyboard work of Alan Wishart (brother
of Runrig's Pete, now a Member of the Scottish Parliament)
In fact Barra's pedigree is good all round with links
to Big Country and comparisons to All About Eve. For lovers
of progressive rock Iona is another obvious reference
point although Barra prefers to stick to the 3 and 4 minute
song (albeit with a very full sound-it's what they pack
into the short time as they say!) Another possible reason
for the shortness of the numbers is the fact that these
songs were recorded between 1986 and 1987 with two versions
of 'Seafever' and four tracks recorded as Kingfishers
Catch Fire thrown in for good measure. The KCF tracks
reveal a more soul like quality to Tracey's vocals recalling
Julie Driscoll perhaps. (The rhythm section is also noticeably
heavier)
As this is a retrospective compilation it is probably
best sampled in small measures for maximum impact. Nevertheless,
this is another worthwhile and important release from
Hi-Note with the added bonus of a fetching 8 page booklet
featuring artwork by Colin Masson and an interesting history
of the band.

Semlah
- Ruin (CD demo)
Now
this is top quality doom! Straight out of Sweden and straight
out of the Candlemass master class, Semlah have taken
the classic doom template, added in some classic rock
references and a tad of stoner, and come up with a stonker
of an EP.
There's
five tracks on offer, and any one of them should have
the Europena metal labels snapping after them. Unlike
many bands who just chug away, Semlah actually know how
to write songs, even if they come in a direct line from
Sabbath circa 1972. Those on the scene make a great deal
about bassist Wilbur Eriksson being ex Count Raven, but
the whole band is cooking with special mention for Johan
Nilssons excellent vocals.
Standout
tracks are "My Ruin" which is so Metal Blade
1985 it hurts and the moody, emotional, yet crushing "
Silent Sermons In The Plastic Church". Excellent
BULLDOZER - Mad Dog EP
Formerly
known as Ostmoe (primarily the one man band known as Thorleif
Østmoe), whose 1999 self titled CD ended up as
as no. 5 in our Best Albums of 1999, they've metamorphosised
into a 4 piece band known as Bulldozer.
The
reason for this is allegedly due to the new songs being
heavier and more guitar based. However, what I hear is
a natural progression. Yes it is heavier, but it's still
all 70's inspired rock, with some marvellously infectious
riffs on "Mad Dog", beautiful acoustic touches
on "Sweet Sensation" and the almost psychedelic
stoner of "Free As A Bird".
It's
not as unique as Ostmoe, certainly more mainstream, but
still a joy to hear. Highly recommended.
