RICK RAY - A Summary Of The Works of Rick Ray (Neurosis)Having previously reviewed Rick Ray in positive terms it was with pleasure that this was popped into the CD tray. As the title suggests this a compilation featuring eleven tracks from eleven different albums released between March 1999 and June 2000! A fairly phenomenal workrate, I'm sure you'll agree. Primarily a one man band, with contributions from Rick Schults on clarinet and vocals on one track from Jack Ambrose, this is a show case for Ricks instrumental virtuosity. Harking back to the glorious days when fusion was at the fore and no-one was embarrassed to create 'concepts'. Particularly inspiring is "The Daulhowz Concerto", originally on "Atomic Soldiers", which features some quite outstanding interplay between guitar and clarinet. Mainly instrumental, there is the odd moment where your attention wanders, and Rick isn't the greatest singer in the world, but when everything clicks into place, as on "Scream" and "Burn Of The Century", this is outstanding. One for all the Frank Marino fans out there. Recommended. Available on line
