Rick Ray - Guitarsenal (Neurosis Records)

There's productive and there's madness! In the last 2 years Rick Ray has released 16 CDs worth of material, solo and with his band Riot Act. Mad, I say, mad!

The material on offer is mainly instrumental progressive fusion, with the odd vocal track thrown in. There's stacks of inventive, expressive, experimental guitar work on display. Some of the tracks have Ray on vocals, and things take a more traditional rock route, but on numbers like "If I Had The Chance" the combination works very well.

Rick Ray plays guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, guitar synths and RX8 and provides vocals. He's produced, recorded and mixed all CDs, writes most of the songs are and the only other musician to appear is Rick Schultz, of the Euclid Orchestra, on clarinet. A very talented musician, the only mild criticism would be the samey qulaity of some of the instrumentals. Things work best when the experimental takes the lead, as on "Mellow-D".
