Fiel Garvie - !Vuka !Vuka (Noisebox)And a huge shout out to Noisebox records who have produced a no expenses spared CD package that puts most majors to shame, and almost makes the format seem worthwhile. But away from that, and the frankly disconcerting cover image, this is a remarkably good record. I'd always had Norfolf marked down as a League of Gentlemen type place and, for once, it looks like my rank prejudices were spot on. A very outre view of life, coupled with spiky, edgy music makes Fiel Garvie the indie band that all others should aspire to become. "Risk" is a huge hit single in waiting, but "A Man" is their (first?) classic. This is the one where the 60s psych, indie, rock and luscious vocals of the unfortunately named Anne Reekie (in joke for Edinburgh folk) work their way under your skin, and make you feel ever so slightly soiled. A disturbing gem of a record. www.fielgarvie.co.uk |
